EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Reverend Isaac Taylor's 'Scenes in America' published in London in 1821, vividly depicts pivotal moments in the exploration of Central and South America by European conquistadors Balboa and Pizarro. In the first scene, Balboa, the Spanish explorer, is shown reaching the Pacific Ocean after crossing the Isthmus of Panama in 1513. The indigenous people, dressed in colourful attire, are depicted in awe and wonderment as they witness the European discovery of the sea. In the second scene, Pizarro, the famous conqueror of the Inca Empire, is shown separating his men by a line in the sand on the Isle of Gallo in 1526. The Peruvian natives, dressed in traditional costumes, are portrayed with fear and trepidation, unsure of the intentions of the intruders. The third scene illustrates the Peruvians' fear of a lunar eclipse, an event that was unfamiliar to them. The indigenous people are shown huddled together, seeking refuge and protection from the ominous sky. The discovery of quinine bark from the cinchona tree, a native plant to South America, is not depicted in this engraving but was a significant event in the exploration of the region. The bark, which contains the active ingredient quinine, was used to treat malaria, a disease that was prevalent among European explorers and settlers. This enlightening image not only provides a glimpse into the past but also serves as an educational tool, offering children a fascinating insight into the history of exploration and discovery in Central and South America. The intricate detail and vibrant colours of the handcoloured copperplate engraving add to its allure and make it a captivating addition to any collection.
