EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Audience of the Dutch with Garcia II of Kongo, 1642," offers a glimpse into the rich cultural exchange that took place between Europe and Africa during the early modern period. The photograph depicts Garcia II, King of the Kongo Kingdom in Central Africa, seated on a grand red velvet throne embroidered with the image of Don Alvaro, his predecessor. The throne's opulence is further accentuated by the magnificent Turkish carpet covering the floor beneath it. Over the king's head, a canopy of white satin adorned with gold embroidery and fringe provides shade and a sense of regal grandeur. The audience chamber is filled with an eclectic mix of European and African art and textiles, reflecting the complex interplay of cultural influences that characterized the Kongo Court during this time. The image is a handcoloured copperplate engraving by Antonio Sasso, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy, in 1843. The meticulous detail and vibrant colours of the engraving bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness a moment of diplomacy and cultural exchange between two vastly different worlds.
