EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts two exquisite hummingbird species native to the Antilles: the Antillean Crested Hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus) and the Sapphire-throated Hummingbird (Lepidopyga coeruleogularis). The image is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The Antillean Crested Hummingbird, also known as Buffon's Hummingbird, is a small bird with iridescent green and purple feathers, a long, curved bill, and distinctive crest feathers on its head. This species is endemic to the Greater Antilles, specifically Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. They are known for their agility and vibrant colors, which help them attract nectar from flowers. The Sapphire-throated Hummingbird, on the other hand, is a small, slender bird with a bright sapphire-blue throat, emerald-green back, and a long, straight bill. They are found in the Lesser Antilles, specifically the Windward Islands. These hummingbirds are known for their iridescent plumage and their ability to hover in mid-air while feeding on nectar. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century ornithological illustration. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece. The Complete Works of Buffon were a groundbreaking series of natural history texts, and this lithograph is a prime example of the high-quality illustrations that were produced as part of the project.
