EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases two intriguing depictions of Ancient Etruscan figures of Apollo from the renowned work "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" by Giulio Ferrario, published in Florence in 1843. In the first representation, we see a mirror reflecting a seated figure identified as Apulu or Apollo, accompanied by two other gods. The goddess Corsi, or Minerva, is depicted on the left, her head adorned with a helmet and holding a spear. The identity of the god on the right is less clear, but he may be Tinia, the Etruscan equivalent of Jupiter or Zeus. Minerva is often associated with childbirth and is believed to have assisted Etruscan midwives, making her presence here intriguing. The second depiction of Apollo is a marble bas-relief, where he is shown flaying alive Marsyas, a satyr who had challenged Apollo to a musical contest. Apollo, as the god of music, was angered by Marsyas' arrogance and punished him with this gruesome fate. The scene is a testament to the complex mythology and rich symbolism of Ancient Etruscan and Greek mythology. This handcoloured copperplate engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world, providing a visual representation of the gods and their stories that continue to captivate and inspire us today.
