EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," showcases two fascinating and vibrant birds of the African continent: the African Emerald Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx cupreus) and the Black-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus). The African Emerald Cuckoo, also known as the Copper-green Cuckoo or the Copper-rumped Cuckoo, is a small, slender bird with an iridescent green back and rump, and a long, curved tail. Its most distinctive feature is its bright, emerald-green coloration, which is particularly noticeable on its wings when in flight. The African Emerald Cuckoo is a brood parasite, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds and lets them raise its young. The Black-mandibled Toucan, also known as the Channel-billed Toucan or the Black-billed Toucan, is a large, colorful bird with a distinctive, large, black beak that is almost as long as its body. Its plumage is mostly black with a bright orange-red chest and a yellow-orange bill tip. The Black-mandibled Toucan is a frugivore, meaning it feeds primarily on fruit, and plays an important role in the dispersal of seeds in the rainforest. Both of these birds are native to the African rainforests and are important components of their respective ecosystems. This beautiful illustration not only showcases their striking appearances but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration.
