EDITORS COMMENTS
Admiral Sir Baldwin Wake Walker, 1st Baronet, KCB, CMG (6 January 1802 - 12 February 1876) This vintage photograph captures the distinguished figure of Admiral Sir Baldwin Wake Walker, 1st Baronet, KCB, CMG. Born on 6 January 1802, Walker rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to become Surveyor of the Navy from 1848 to 1861. His dedication and expertise in the field of naval architecture and engineering were instrumental in modernizing the British fleet. The photograph, taken in the 1870s, showcases the admiral's formal attire, complete with the decorations of his knighthoods - the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) and the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB). The image is reminiscent of the Victorian era, with its traditional studio setting and formal pose. Walker's career spanned several decades, from the early 1800s to the late 1800s. He served during the Napoleonic Wars and played a significant role in the Crimean War. His contributions to the navy were recognized and celebrated in his time, and his legacy continues to be an important part of maritime history. This carte de visite, produced in the late 1800s or early 1900s, is a testament to the celebrity status of naval officers during that era. It is a valuable piece of cultural heritage, providing a glimpse into the past and offering a connection to the rich history of the Royal Navy.
