Auberge Harper Landed Marines Re Named They
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 9th Beach Group Plaque, located in Ver sur Mer, Normandy. The plaque commemorates the significant role played by the Royal Marines under the command of Colonel Harper during the D-Day landings in 1944. From June 6 to July 30, the old Hotel in Ver sur Mer served as their headquarters, earning the new name "Auberge d'Or" or the "Golden Inn." The Marines had landed on Gold Beach, making this location a strategic base for their operations during the critical early stages of the Allied invasion of Normandy. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to imagine the bustling activity and sense of camaraderie that would have filled the hotel's halls as the brave soldiers prepared for their mission. The 9th Beach Group Plaque stands as a testament to their valor and the indelible mark they left on this small French town.
