This engraving depicts the Naval Battle in the Oresund Strait between the Dutch Republic and Sweden, which took place on August 27, 1658. The Oresund Strait, located between Denmark and Sweden, was a crucial waterway for trade and military movements during the 17th century. This engagement was a significant event in the Second Northern War, a conflict between Denmark-Norway and Sweden for dominance in the Baltic region. In the foreground of the image, Dutch ships, with their distinctive red, white, and blue ensigns, are shown engaging Swedish vessels. The Dutch fleet, led by Admiral Maarten Tromp, was larger and better-equipped than the Swedish force, which was under the command of Admiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm.
