EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil painting depicts James, Duke of York, later James II of England, in the year 1665, when he was around 32 years old. The Duke is shown in a three-quarter length pose, wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, a sign of his high rank and honor. His regal posture and confident gaze convey a sense of authority and strength. John Greenhill, the artist, is believed to have painted this portrait around the same year, based on the Duke's appearance and the style of the painting. Greenhill was a prominent British painter of the Restoration period, known for his portraits of the nobility and gentry. James, Duke of York, was the second surviving son of King Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France. He served in the Royal Navy and the Army during the English Civil War and the First Anglo-Dutch War. In 1660, after the Restoration of the monarchy, he was appointed Lord High Admiral and later became Duke of York in 1660. This painting is a testament to James's military and noble status during the Restoration period. It also reflects the artistic trends of the time, with its rich colors, intricate details, and grandeur. The painting's provenance is not well documented, but it is a valuable addition to the historical record of James II's early life and career as Duke of York.
