This stunning oil painting captures the intellectual and medical brilliance of Dr. James Patterson (1810-1869), an Irish-born physician who made significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology. Born in County Cavan, Ireland, Dr. Patterson came to England to study medicine at University College London. He later became a surgeon at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, where he developed a keen interest in eye diseases. In 1844, he was appointed as the first ophthalmic surgeon to the new Westminster Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1867. Dr. Patterson was a pioneer in the use of chloroform as an anesthetic during eye surgery, greatly improving patient comfort and reducing pain. He also developed several innovative surgical instruments, including a new type of forceps for removing cataracts. His groundbreaking research on the anatomy of the eye led to a better understanding of various eye conditions and their treatments.
