EDITORS COMMENTS

This evocative image captures the final moments of one of the most influential figures in literary history: William Shakespeare. Depicted here is a document believed to be his original will, signed and sealed on March 25, 1616. The image is from the collection of The National Archives in London, England, and was published by Mary Evans Picture Library. William Shakespeare, born on April 26, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, left an indelible mark on the world of literature with his poetic masterpieces and groundbreaking plays. His works, which include 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems, continue to captivate audiences and inspire artists to this day. The will, written in Shakespeare's own hand, reveals his meticulous planning and attention to detail. He bequeaths his "second best bed" to his wife Anne, and leaves smaller items to his children and grandchildren. The will also includes provisions for his sister and her children, as well as for the care of his servant and the burial of his body in the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. The document provides a poignant reminder of the human side of this legendary figure, and serves as a testament to the enduring power of his art. The image of the will, with its intricate details and historical significance, offers a glimpse into the life of a man whose works continue to shape our understanding of the human condition and our rich linguistic heritage.
