Mrs Anthony Eden & son Simon by Madame Yevonde
Mrs Anthony Eden, nee Beatrice Beckett pictured with her baby son, Simon. In 1923, shortly before Edens election to Parliament, he married Beatrice and together they had three sons: Simon (born 1924), Robert, and Nicholas ). Robert died soon after birth in 1928. The marriage was not a success, with both parties apparently conducting affairs. By the mid-1930s his diaries seldom mention Beatrice. The marriage finally broke up under the strain of the loss of their son Simon, who was killed in action with the RAF in Burma in 1945. His plane was reported " missing in action" on 23 June, and found on 16 July; Eden did not want the news to be public until after the election on 5 July, to avoid claims of " making political capital" from it. Date: 1925

Anthony Beatrice Beckett Eden Feb16 Madame Politicians Simon Wives Yevonde 1925
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant portrait captured by renowned British photographer Madame Yevonde in February 1925, Beatrice Beckett, later to become Lady Eden, is depicted with her young son, Simon Eden. At the time of this photograph, Anthony Eden, Beatrice's husband and the future British Prime Minister, was on the brink of a successful political career. The couple had married in 1923, and Simon was their eldest son, born in 1924. They went on to have two more sons, Robert (who tragically died soon after birth in 1928) and Nicholas (1930-1985). The marriage between Anthony and Beatrice was not a happy one. By the mid-1930s, Eden's diaries reveal that he seldom mentioned his wife. The marriage was further strained by the loss of their son Simon, who was killed in action with the RAF in Burma in 1945. Simon's plane was reported as "missing in action" on 23 June, but Eden chose to keep the news private until after the election on 5 July, fearing political exploitation. The tragic loss of their son ultimately led to the breakdown of the marriage. Despite the personal challenges, this photograph captures a tender moment between mother and son, offering a glimpse into their lives before the storms that were to come. The portrait, taken by the renowned Madame Yevonde, adds an air of elegance and sophistication to the image, making it a poignant reminder of the complexities of love, loss, and political life.
