This stunning mosaic, depicting the mythological tale of Hylas and the Nymphs, dates back to the late 2nd century B.C. or early Imperial Period. Discovered in Tor Bella Monaca, Rome, this intricate work of art is now proudly displayed at the National Roman Museum, Palazzo Massimo. The mythological scene portrayed in the mosaic is derived from Greek mythology. Hylas, an Argonaut and companion of Jason, was known for his exceptional beauty. One day, while Hylas was collecting water from a spring, he was lured away by a group of enchanted nymphs. They were captivated by his charm and decided to keep him with them forever. Jason, upon realizing Hylas was missing, searched for him relentlessly but to no avail. This mosaic captures the moment when Hylas is being led away by the nymphs, with one reaching out to touch him.
