This engraving depicts Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg (1773-1859), an Austrian statesman and diplomat who rose to prominence in European politics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Metternich, with his distinctive moustache and sideburns, is shown here in a formal seated position, dressed in the attire of a prince. He served as Chancellor of Austria from 1809, succeeding Stadion, and held a pivotal role in European affairs during the tumultuous period following the Napoleonic Wars.
