EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie at Quex Park VAD Hospital in Birchington, Kent, during World War I. Established on October 15, 1914, by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, the hospital provided medical care, rehabilitation, and recuperation for wounded soldiers and Belgian refugees. The image features at least three Belgian patients, one of whom dons a Boy Scout uniform, adding a sense of normalcy and youthfulness to the otherwise somber setting. The other men in the photograph may be hospital staff or a visiting entertainer, bringing joy and diversion to the patients. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The hospital closed its doors on January 31, 1919, marking the end of an important chapter in the history of wartime medical care and humanitarian efforts. This poignant snapshot offers a glimpse into the lives of those who sought refuge and healing at Quex Park VAD Hospital during the tumultuous year of 1915.
