1849 Controversial Doctor Dreyfus Scandal Thinker Zionist 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This thought-provoking photograph captures Max Nordau (1849-1923), a German doctor, political thinker, and ardent Zionist whose views were both groundbreaking and controversial during the tumultuous era of the Dreyfus Affair. Nordau, born in Hungary but a naturalized German citizen, was a prominent figure in the Jewish community and a vocal advocate for Jewish self-determination and the establishment of a Jewish homeland. During the late 19th century, Nordau gained renown as a neurologist and wrote extensively on hysteria, addiction, and degeneration. However, it was his political writings that earned him notoriety and controversy. In 1898, he published "Degeneration," a scathing critique of Western civilization, which argued that the decline of European society could be attributed to the influence of Jews and other "degenerate" elements. The Dreyfus Affair, a high-profile antisemitic scandal that rocked France from 1894 to 1906, provided a backdrop for Nordau's most controversial views. He was a staunch supporter of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain falsely accused of treason, and spoke out against the antisemitic propaganda that fueled the affair. Nordau's unwavering commitment to Dreyfus's cause earned him both admiration and enmity. Despite the controversy surrounding his views, Nordau's influence on Zionist thought and Jewish identity cannot be overstated. His ideas on Jewish self-determination and the need for a Jewish homeland laid the groundwork for the modern Zionist movement. This photograph, taken during Nordau's later years, captures the intensity and conviction that defined his life and work.
