EDITORS COMMENTS
Massimo Taparelli d'Azeglio, Marchese di Azeglio (1798-1866), was a prominent Italian statesman and aide-de-camp to Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Sardinia. Born in Turin, Italy, in 1798, Azeglio was educated in law and literature before joining the army. He rose through the ranks to become a trusted advisor and confidant to King Vittorio Emanuele II. During the First Italian War of Independence (1848-1849), Azeglio served as the Prime Minister of Piedmont-Sardinia, leading the army to several victories against the Austrians. He was instrumental in drafting the Statuto Albertino, the first Italian constitution, which established a constitutional monarchy in Sardinia-Piedmont. Azeglio's political career was marked by his commitment to Italian unification and his belief in the importance of a strong central government. He served as a deputy in the Italian Parliament and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the formation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Despite his political achievements, Azeglio's tenure as Prime Minister was not without controversy. He was criticized for his authoritarianism and his support for the use of force to suppress political opposition. However, his legacy as a pioneer of Italian unification and a champion of constitutional government endures. This photograph captures Massimo Taparelli d'Azeglio in later life, with a serious and contemplative expression. The image serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to Italian history and his role as a key figure in the country's journey towards independence and unification.
