EDITORS COMMENTS
Martin I of Aragon, also known as "The Humane," is depicted in this stunning 15th-century miniature from the Book of Privileges of the Cartuja de Vall de Christ, housed in the Library of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain. Born in 1356, Martin ascended to the throne of Aragon, Valencia, Sardinia, and Corsica in 1396, and later became King of Sicily in 1409 under the name Martin II. The monarch is shown here in regal attire, seated on a throne adorned with a crook and a crown. The ecclesiastic elder, dressed in a long robe and a mitre, presents a capital letter to Martin, symbolizing the granting of a privilege. Martin's wise and compassionate demeanor is evident in his thoughtful expression and the gentle touch of his hand as he writes on the parchment. Martin I is remembered for his humane and just rule, which earned him the nickname "The Humane." He was a key figure during the late Middle Ages and played an important role in the history of Aragon and the Iberian Peninsula. The intricate details of the miniature, from the rich textures of the fabric to the delicate lines of the lettering, provide a glimpse into the artistic and cultural achievements of the medieval period.
