EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing detail is taken from the Atlas Novus, also known as Atlas Maior, a monumental atlas created by the renowned Dutch cartographers Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) and his son Jan Blaeu (1596-1673) between 1635 and 1665. The atlas, which is considered one of the most impressive cartographic works of the 17th century, was published in Amsterdam but is currently housed in the Biblioteca de Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia) in Barcelona, Spain. The image showcases a section of the world map from the atlas, with a particular focus on the construction of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The pyramid, located in Egypt, is depicted in meticulous detail through an etching technique, providing a fascinating glimpse into the cartographers' understanding of ancient Egyptian architecture during the early modern period. The Blaeu family, who were prominent mapmakers and publishers in Amsterdam, produced numerous atlases and globes throughout their careers. The Atlas Novus, with its exceptional accuracy and intricate illustrations, remains a testament to their dedication and expertise in the field of cartography. This detailed map not only showcases the Blaeus' cartographic prowess but also offers a captivating glimpse into the historical and cultural knowledge of the time.
