EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of Moorish camps and settlements north of the ancient city of Timbuktu, Mali, circa 1910. Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in the West African nation of Mali and was once a thriving center of Islamic learning and commerce. The Moors, also known as the Tuareg or Kel Tamasheq people, are a nomadic ethnic group who have inhabited the Sahara Desert and the Sahel region for centuries. In this image, we see a collection of huts and tents that make up the Moorish camps and settlements. The huts, made of sun-baked mud bricks, are typical of the traditional architecture of the region. The tents, made of camel hair or goatskin, are used by the nomadic sections of the Moorish population. The camps and settlements are located in the arid and unforgiving landscape of the Sahara Desert, yet the Moors have managed to create a vibrant and resilient community. The Moors were known for their skills in trade, particularly in salt and gold, as well as their knowledge of the desert and its resources. They played a significant role in the history of Timbuktu, contributing to its reputation as a center of learning and culture. Despite the challenges of living in such a harsh environment, the Moors have maintained their unique identity and traditions, which continue to be an important part of Malian and African history.
