This photograph captures a pivotal moment during the Mahdist War in Sudan, which took place between 1881 and 1889. The Mahdist War was a significant military conflict between the Mahdist State, led by the Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad ibn Abd Allah, and the forces of the British Empire, led by General Charles Gordon.
