Madame de Maintenon's Arrival at Versailles: A Historical Moment in 17th Century France This image from the annals of French history depicts a pivotal moment in the life of Madame de Maintenon (1634-1719), as she is warmly welcomed by King Louis XIV (1638-1715) at the Palace of Versailles in 1685. Madame de Maintenon, whose real name was Marie-Angélique Arnaud de Thouars, had recently become the king's secret wife, a union that was kept hidden from the public for many years. The scene unfolds on the Piece d'Eau des Suisses, a large ornamental basin situated between the Grand Trianon and the Petit Trianon. The couple is shown boarding a small boat, surrounded by their retinue, as they embark on a leisurely trip on the tranquil waters. The king, dressed in a resplendent red coat and tricorn hat, extends a welcoming hand to his new bride, who wears a simple black dress and a white veil. The year was 1685, and the political landscape of France was undergoing significant changes. King Louis XIV, who had been a bachelor for most of his reign, had finally decided to marry, choosing a woman who was more than three decades his junior. The secret marriage was kept hidden from the public, as the king's advisors believed that a royal divorce and remarriage would be detrimental to the stability of the realm. Madame de Maintenon would go on to play an influential role in the court of Versailles, serving as the king's confidante, advisor, and the governess of his illegitimate children. This photograph, taken circa 17th century, offers a glimpse into a fascinating period of French history, when a secret love affair between a king and his mistress transformed into a powerful and enduring partnership.
