EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the essence of traditional Scottish clan costume as worn by a proud MacLeod clan member in the early 20th century. The image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 2," published in 1923, and showcases the intricate details of the Highland dress that has been passed down through generations. The MacLeod clan, originally from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, is one of the oldest and most distinguished clans in Scotland. The MacLeod tartan, with its distinctive blue, green, and gold colors, is proudly displayed in the plaid wrapped around the man's waist and draped over his left shoulder. The plaid is secured with a brooch, known as a "brooch of gaelic knots," which is a symbol of the clan's heritage and history. The man wears a white linen shirt, which is worn tucked into his belted plaid. Over the shirt, he wears a waistcoat, or "waistcoat," which is also made of the MacLeod tartan. The waistcoat is adorned with silver buttons and a silver chain, which adds to the overall elegance of the ensemble. He completes the look with a pair of hose, or knee-length socks, and a pair of ghillie brogues, or traditional Scottish leather shoes. The man's bonnet, or "feileadh mór," is a tall, round hat that is a distinctive feature of Highland dress. It is made of wool and is often adorned with a cock feather, which represents the clan's martial prowess. The man's face is serious and proud, reflecting the deep sense of history and tradition that is associated with the Scottish Highlands and the MacLeod clan.
