EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oval portrait captures the regal presence of Louis XV, King of France and Navarre, who reigned from 1715 until his death in 1774. Born in 1710, Louis XV was the great-great-grandson of Louis XIV and the last monarch of the Bourbon dynasty before the French Revolution. Louis XV's reign was marked by the pinnacle of the French monarchy's power and opulence. He was known for his love of hunting, women, and the arts, and his court was a center of culture and luxury. However, his reign was also marked by political instability and financial troubles, including the Seven Years' War and the growing influence of the Parlement of Paris. This portrait, believed to have been painted around 1770, shows Louis XV in his later years. He is depicted in formal attire, with a serious expression and a well-groomed beard. The king's eyes are piercing, and his posture is confident, reflecting his strong sense of authority. The richly decorated background and the intricate details of the king's clothing add to the grandeur of the image, emphasizing his status as a monarch and a symbol of the French monarchy's power and wealth. Louis XV's reign came to an end in 1774, when he died at the Palace of Versailles. He was succeeded by his grand-nephew, Louis XVI, who would reign until the French Revolution in 1789. This portrait serves as a reminder of the grandeur and complexity of the French monarchy during the Bourbon era, a time of opulence, culture, and political turmoil.
