In the year 1612, King Louis XIII of France found himself deeply intrigued by the tales that reached his ears about the Infanta of Spain, Anne of Austria. The Infanta, who was the daughter of the Spanish King Philip III and his wife, Margaret of Austria, had gained a reputation for her beauty, intelligence, and grace. Louis XIII, who was then only 22 years old, was captivated by her and decided that he must see her for himself. As he pondered the possibility of a marriage alliance between their two powerful European kingdoms, Louis XIII issued a command for a portrait of the Infanta to be painted. The artist was none other than Peter Paul Rubens, the renowned Flemish painter, who was known for his masterful depictions of the human form. The resulting portrait, which is believed to have been completed in 1612, shows Anne of Austria as a young woman of great beauty and poise. She is depicted wearing the royal robes of Spain, with a regal expression on her face, and a diamond-studded tiara adorning her head. Little did anyone know at the time that this painting would mark the beginning of a significant chapter in European history. For, in 1615, Louis XIII and the Infanta would indeed marry, and their union would produce one child, the future Louis XIV, who would go on to rule France for over 72 years and leave an indelible mark on European history.
