EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Longtail Croaker, Lonchurus lanceolatus, also known as Meagre, Stone Bass, Shadefish, and Argyrosomus regius. The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The work was directed by Turpin, with the engraving executed by Massard and the painting by Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Longtail Croaker is a marine fish with a long, slender body and a distinctive elongated tail. It is a popular food fish in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and is also known as Meagre or Stone Bass. The fish is shown here in exquisite detail, with its scales beautifully rendered in stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of small dots to create tonal variations. The background is kept simple, allowing the fish to take center stage. The Longtail Croaker was an important species in the natural history collections of the time, and this illustration is a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators of the early 19th century. The intricacy and beauty of the engraving make it a valuable addition to any collection of historical fish illustrations.
