London Fire Brigade, second Brixton Riots

On 28 September 1985 the second Brixton riot erupted. After the arrest of a man following a shooting incident, a largely black crowd protested at Brixton Police station in Lambeth, South London. The protest spread to the surrounding area. One building and dozens of cars were destroyed. The police lost control of the area for approximately 48 hours. Seen here is a London firefighter in front of a furniture store and flats, located on the corner of Gresham and Loughborough Road, destroyed by fire after being deliberately ignited by rioters

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the turbulent night of 28 September 1985, London's Brixton community erupted into riots following the arrest of a black man after a shooting incident. The peaceful protest at Brixton Police station in Lambeth, South London, soon escalated into widespread unrest, with rioters setting fires to buildings and vehicles in the surrounding area. Seen here is a brave London Fire Brigade firefighter standing in front of a furniture store and flats located on the corner of Gresham and Loughborough Road, both engulfed in flames after being deliberately ignited by rioters. The firefighter's determined expression conveys the intense urgency of the situation, as the fire rages on behind him. The riots continued for approximately 48 hours, leaving one building and dozens of cars destroyed. The London Fire Brigade worked tirelessly to contain the blazes, risking their own safety to help quell the unrest in the community. This powerful image captures a moment of tension and resilience during the Brixton riots of the 1980s.
