This evocative 16th century print depicts Linacre Home, the residence of the renowned physician to King Henry VIII, Thomas Linacre. Situated in Knightrider Street, in the heart of Blackfriars, London, this historic building holds significant importance in the annals of English history. Thomas Linacre (1460-1524) was an English humanist scholar and physician, who played a pivotal role in the translation of Greek medical texts into Latin. His translations, which included works by Galen and Hippocrates, greatly influenced the development of medical knowledge in Europe during the Renaissance. Linacre's association with the royal court began in 1501 when he was appointed as the king's personal physician. He served in this capacity until his death in 1524. During his tenure, he treated Henry VIII for various ailments, including a severe case of gout. The Linacre Home in Knightrider Street was a hub of intellectual activity, attracting scholars and intellectuals from all over Europe. It was here that Linacre established the College of Physicians, which later became the Royal College of Physicians, and the Linacre Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford.
