The Island of Ré, located in front of the city of La Rochelle, served as a crucial Huguenot resistance center during the French Wars of Religion. During the late 1620s, King Louis XIII of France, determined to quell the Huguenot rebellion, laid siege to La Rochelle and the Island of Ré. The siege lasted for over a year, with the French forces attempting to starve out the Huguenots. However, the resilient defenders held out, refusing to surrender. The tide turned on the 8th of November, 1627, when a fleet of English and Dutch ships arrived to break the siege.
