This stunning photograph captures the awe-inspiring De Lesseps Statue, a monument dedicated to the visionary French diplomat and engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894), located at the entrance of the Suez Canal in Port Said, Egypt. The statue, completed in 1899, stands as a testament to de Lesseps' groundbreaking achievement in connecting the Mediterranean and Red Seas through the construction of the Suez Canal. Born in Strasbourg, France, de Lesseps began his career as a diplomat before turning his attention to engineering and exploration. In 1854, he proposed the idea of building a canal through the Isthmus of Suez, a project that was met with skepticism due to the challenges of engineering such a large waterway through a desert region. However, de Lesseps' determination and persistence paid off, and construction on the canal began in 1859. The canal was officially opened in 1869, significantly reducing the time and cost of shipping between Europe and Asia. The De Lesseps Statue, designed by the French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, depicts the engineer standing tall and confident, with one hand extended as if to welcome ships into the canal. The statue was erected in 1899, 30 years after the canal's opening, to commemorate de Lesseps' accomplishments and to mark the entrance to the canal's northern branch. The statue remains a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the engineering marvel that is the Suez Canal.
