EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lena Ashwell, OBE (28 September 1872 - 13 March 1957), a renowned British actress and actor-manager, in the midst of her tireless efforts to support troops and raise funds during World War I. Known as the first to organize large-scale entertainment for soldiers at the front, Ashwell is seen here in a Three Arts overall, surrounded by toys produced by the workers at the Fund's workrooms. The Three Arts Women's Employment Fund, an organization that provided employment and training for women in the arts, was another cause close to Ashwell's heart. She was an active supporter, alongside Elizabeth Asquith, and helped stage productions to generate funds for the organization. The year is 1915, and the photograph offers a glimpse into the determination and resilience of those who sought to make a difference during this tumultuous time. Ashwell's dedication to her causes extended beyond the stage, demonstrating her commitment to the welfare of her community and her country.
