EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Lady Louisa Lennox (1743-1821) alongside her husband's regiment, the 25th Regiment of Foot, in the picturesque setting of Fort St. Philip at Port Mahon, Menorca. The year is estimated to be around 1771, during a significant period in British military history when the 25th Regiment was stationed there from 1769 until 1775. The regiment was one of several deployed to maintain control of this strategically important Mediterranean base, which had been regained from Spain at the end of the Seven Years War in 1763. Lady Louisa's husband, Lord George Lennox (1737-1805), served as colonel of the 25th Regiment from 1762 until his death in 1805. The regiment's service in Menorca is commemorated in this set of six unsigned oil paintings on canvas, attributed to the Italian artist Giuseppe Chiesa (d. 1789). The paintings, which originally belonged to Lord George Lennox, offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and activities of the regiment during its time in Menorca. The fortifications of Fort St. Philip, which guard the main harbor at Port Mahon, can be seen in the background of this image. The imposing structures served as a reminder of the ongoing military presence necessary to protect British interests in the region. Lady Louisa's presence among the soldiers adds a personal touch to the scene, highlighting the role of the wives and families of officers in the colonial military experience.
