EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Drogheda (Kathleen Moore Pelham Burn), the indomitable Countess of Drogheda, with her two young children, Viscount Moore and Lady Patricia Moore, during World War I. Lady Drogheda, who was born into the esteemed Pelham-Burn family, made headlines when she married the 10th Earl of Drogheda in 1909, but her life took an unexpected turn when she divorced him in 1922 to marry Guillemo Delanda, a renowned polo player. A keen sportswoman herself, Lady Drogheda excelled in tennis and even participated in the prestigious Wimbledon Championships. Her adventurous spirit extended beyond sports, as she learned to fly and became an active volunteer during the First World War, working tirelessly to help refugees. This photograph, taken in 1917, captures a moment of respite amidst the chaos of the war. The Countess, dressed in an elegant yet practical outfit, gazes lovingly at her children, who are dressed in matching outfits and appear playful and carefree. The photograph not only showcases the elegance and grace of a lady of high society but also highlights the strength and fortitude of a woman who defied societal norms and forged her own path. The image is a testament to the enduring spirit of women during a time of great upheaval and serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination that continues to define the female experience. This photograph is a valuable historical record of a remarkable woman and her children during a pivotal moment in history.
