EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Lady Diana Manners, later known as Lady Duff Cooper and Viscountess Norwich, in 1915 as she trained to become a nurse at Guy's Hospital during the First World War. Amidst the opulence and elegance of the Edwardian era, Lady Diana was a prominent figure in high society, a member of the Coterie - a group of intellectuals and friends. However, her commitment to serving her country and altruism led her to abandon the comforts of the drawing-room and devote herself to the noble cause of nursing. The headline "Deserter of the Drawing-Room for War: A Society Nurse" encapsulates the audacity and courage of Lady Diana's decision to leave her privileged life behind and contribute to the war effort. In this image, she is resplendent in a magnificent evening cloak and headdress, a stark contrast to the plain, practical uniform she would soon don as a nurse. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the women of the aristocracy during the war, who put aside their social status and personal comfort to serve their country and care for the wounded. Lady Diana's transformation from a fashionable society beauty to a selfless nurse is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the era and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. This photograph, taken in 1915, is a powerful and evocative representation of the sacrifices and determination of the women who answered the call to duty during the First World War.
