EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black and white portrait, Lady Cynthia Asquith, née Charteris, is depicted with her eldest son, John, in the year 1920. Born in 1887 as the eldest daughter of the 14th Earl of Wemyss and Lady Violet Bulwer-Lytton, Lady Cynthia was a renowned author and an extraordinary survivor of the Titanic disaster. In 1910, she married Herbert Asquith, the second son of the then-Prime Minister, H.H. Asquith. The image captures Lady Cynthia's striking features and her warm, maternal expression as she gazes at her son, John. Her elegant attire, with a high collar and intricate beading, is reminiscent of the fashionable trends of the Roaring Twenties. John, dressed in a smart suit and holding a toy, looks up at his mother with a playful smile. Lady Cynthia's life was marked by both tragedy and triumph. She survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, an experience she later chronicled in her book "The Voyage: An Account of the Disaster to the Titanic." Her marriage to Herbert Asquith, who served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer and later became the Liberal Party leader, brought her into the heart of British political circles. Despite the challenges and public scrutiny that came with her high-profile marriage and social standing, Lady Cynthia remained a dedicated mother to her four children. This heartwarming portrait is a testament to her love and devotion to her family, offering a glimpse into the personal life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on history.
