1761 1824 Administrator Lachlan Macquarie
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Lachlan Macquarie (1761-1824), a prominent British soldier and colonial administrator, in the prime of his career during the early 19th century. Macquarie is best known for his role as the fifth Governor of New South Wales, a British penal colony in present-day Australia, serving from 1810 to 1822. Born in Scotland, Macquarie joined the British Army at a young age and rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a capable and disciplined soldier. He served in the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars. In 1805, Macquarie was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the New South Wales Corps, a position that would eventually lead to his governorship. During his time as Governor, Macquarie implemented numerous reforms aimed at improving the lives of the convicts and free settlers in New South Wales. He established the first public schools, introduced a system of land grants to encourage agriculture, and oversaw the construction of roads, bridges, and public buildings. Macquarie is also credited with introducing the use of convict labor to build infrastructure, which helped to transform the colony into a thriving community. This portrait, taken in 1824, shows Macquarie in his later years, with a stern expression and military bearing. He is dressed in the uniform of a major-general, reflecting his continued service in the British Army. The portrait is a testament to Macquarie's impressive military career and his significant contributions to the development of New South Wales as a British colony.
