EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite marble sculpture depicts Kybele, the ancient Oriental mother-goddess, as she was worshipped in Formiae, a city in the Italian region of Campania around 60 BC. Kybele, also known as Cybele or Magna Mater, was a prominent deity in the ancient Mediterranean world, with a rich mythology that spanned from Anatolia to Rome. Seated majestically on her throne, Kybele is flanked by two lions, symbolizing her protective and nurturing role. The lions, with their open mouths and erect ears, are not only guardians but also represent the goddess's wild and untamed nature. The goddess wears a magnificent crown adorned with ivy, pinecones, and a crescent moon, symbolizing her connection to nature, fertility, and the cycles of life. The intricate carvings on the throne, including the depiction of the goddess's attendants, the Cybeleion, and the mythological gates of the city of Pergamon, further emphasize the goddess's importance and her association with power and wealth. This magnificent sculpture is now housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark, a world-renowned museum of ancient art. The museum, founded in 1883, is home to an extensive collection of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman sculptures, as well as other ancient artifacts. This piece is a testament to the rich cultural exchange between the Eastern and Western worlds during ancient times and the enduring influence of mythology on art and human imagination.
