EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F.G. Levrault in Paris in 1816, showcases two fascinating mammals, the Kusimanse (Crossarchus obscurus) and the Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens). The image is taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, and was illustrated by Jean Gabriel Pretre, with engraving by Massard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The Kusimanse, also known as the shining cat or the lesser bushbaby, is a primate native to Madagascar. With its long, bushy tail and pointed ears, it bears a striking resemblance to a small lemur. The species is characterized by its agile limbs and its ability to leap between trees with remarkable ease. The Kusimanse is a vulnerable species, with populations declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens), on the other hand, is a mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. Despite its name, it is not a true panda, but rather a member of the raccoon family. The Red Panda is known for its distinctive red fur, bushy tail, and distinctive markings on its face. This species is classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as poaching for its fur. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this engraving are a testament to the skill of the artist and engraver. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image. This historical piece not only showcases the natural history of these fascinating creatures but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect vulnerable species like the Kusimanse and Red Panda.
