EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving depicts King William III of England, also known as William of Orange, in the year 1694. The portrait was originally painted by Robert Bruce, Earl of Ailesbury, and later reproduced by the Martin brothers, Charles and Leopold, for the publication "Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period." The intricately detailed illustration showcases King William's grand attire, which was a symbol of his power and status during the late 17th century. William III is depicted wearing a high-collared, embroidered jacket, adorned with gold braid and intricate designs. The jacket is fastened with a row of large, ornate buttons, and is worn over a white, long-sleeved shirt. A red sash is draped over his left shoulder and secured with a gold buckle. The king's coat, also made of red fabric, is lined with fur and features large, gold buttons and a long, flowing train. King William's stockings are white and are held up by a garter, while his shoes are made of black leather and feature buckles and decorative laces. The attention to detail in the illustration is remarkable, with every stitch and fold of the king's clothing carefully rendered. The Martin brothers' illustrations were based on a variety of sources, including tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, and portraits. Their work provides a valuable record of fashion and historical costume during the English Civil War period and beyond. This image of King William III offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the English monarchy during the late 17th century.
