EDITORS COMMENTS
King Haakon VII of Denmark, born Prince Carl of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg on August 3, 1872, ascended the Danish throne as the first king of the House of Oldenburg in 1918. However, his most significant moment came in 1905 when he was also elected as the first King of an independent Norway. In this striking image, Haakon VII is depicted in his full regalia, proudly holding the State Regalia during his coronation in Trondheim, Norway, on June 22, 1906. Haakon VII's coronation marked the end of a long and tumultuous period in Norwegian history, which included union with Sweden and Denmark, and the struggle for independence. The king's election was a symbol of Norway's newfound sovereignty and its commitment to a constitutional monarchy. The king's coronation robes are adorned with ermine, a symbol of royal power and prestige. Haakon VII wears a golden crown, the oldest in Europe, which dates back to the 14th century. The crown is topped with a cross and features precious stones, including diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. In his right hand, Haakon VII holds the Sceptre, a golden rod topped with a cross and an orb, symbolizing the king's power and authority. In his left hand, he holds the Mace, a symbol of justice and authority. The Mace is topped with a golden eagle, a symbol of Norway. Haakon VII's moustache, a distinctive feature of his appearance, adds to the regal and majestic image of the king. His calm and resolute expression conveys a sense of determination and strength, reflecting the historical significance of this moment in Norwegian and Danish history.
