Ferdinand VI of Spain, also known as Fernando VI, ruled as King of Spain from 1746 until his death in 1759. Born in Naples in 1713, Ferdinand was a member of the Bourbon dynasty and succeeded his mother, Elisabeth Farnese, upon her death. This engraving from the 18th century captures a moment in the royal court of Ferdinand and his wife, Barbara of Braganza. Barbara, born in Portugal in 1711, was the daughter of John V of Portugal and his second wife, Maria Anna of Austria. She married Ferdinand in 1729, and their union produced no children.
