EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, created by the prolific natural historian Ebenezer Sibly for his Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, offers a glimpse into the traditional attire and lifestyle of a Khoisan woman. The Khoisan people, also known as the Hottentots, are an ethnolinguistic group indigenous to southern Africa. The woman in the image is depicted wearing a conical hat made from animal hide, adorned with intricate beadwork and feathers. Her body is covered in an animal skin apron, fastened with a belt made from the same material. Around her neck, she wears a necklace made from shells and animal teeth, as well as multiple bracelets on her arms. Carrying the essential tools of her culture, she holds a bow and arrows, ready for hunting. The elongation of her labia, a practice known as labial elongation, is a distinguishing feature of some Khoisan women. This engraving provides a historical record of the natural world, as well as the customs and traditions of the Khoisan people. Ebenezer Sibly, a British naturalist and engraver, was known for his extensive work in the field of natural history. His Universal System of Natural History was one of the most comprehensive works of its time, covering the three natural worlds of fauna, flora, and geology. This image, along with the other illustrations in the series, offers a unique perspective into the natural world and the diverse cultures of the past.
