EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Farewell to Kew Bridge: The Old Suspension Bridge Over the Thames Bows Out in 1899 2.. This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment in 1899 when the old Kew Bridge, a historic suspension bridge that once spanned the Thames in London, was being dismantled. The bridge, which connected the boroughs of Richmond and Kew, had served the community for over a century before it was deemed necessary to replace it with a more modern structure. Built in 1759, the Kew Bridge was an engineering marvel of its time, designed by the renowned architect and engineer, Robert Mylne. It was the first bridge to be built across the Thames with a suspension design, and its construction marked a significant milestone in the history of bridge engineering. However, as the years passed, the bridge began to show signs of wear and tear, and it was no longer able to accommodate the increasing traffic demands of the growing city. In 1899, the decision was made to replace the old bridge with a new one, designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette. The demolition of the old Kew Bridge was a meticulous process, carried out with great care to ensure the safety of the workers and the public. The photograph shows the bridge in its final days, with the towers and suspension cables already removed, and the arches standing proudly over the Thames. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the ever-changing landscape of London. It also highlights the importance of progress and the need to adapt to the changing needs of a growing city. Today, the site of the old Kew Bridge is home to the modern Kew Bridge, which continues to connect the boroughs of Richmond and Kew and serves as an essential link in the transportation network of London.
