EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of a tragic maritime accident that occurred at the entrance to Galle Harbour in Sri Lanka on July 16, 1871. The Kadir Rocks, a notorious hazard for navigators, were the unfortunate destination for the P&O mail steamship Rangoon. In the 1870s, the Rangoon was a vital link in the transportation network connecting the East to the West, carrying essential mail and supplies. On this fateful day, the Rangoon, under the command of Captain H.H. Bell, was making its way into the harbour after a long voyage. Despite the warnings of local pilots and the presence of a lighthouse, the ship ran aground on the Kadir Rocks, causing it to sink in shallow waters. The incident resulted in significant damage to the vessel and the loss of several lives. The photograph, taken in the aftermath of the accident, shows the wreckage of the Rangoon scattered among the rocks. The once proud steamship, a symbol of progress and connection, now lies in ruins, a reminder of the unforgiving power of nature and the inherent risks of maritime travel. The image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was more connected by sea than by air, and the dangers of the ocean were ever present.
