Jumbo the elephant at Regents Park, 1865
Jumbo the African elephant at the gardens of the Zoological Society, Regents Park, pictured after he was imported in 1865. Swapped in exchange for a rhino with the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Jumbo fulfilled the zoos desire to have an African elephant as well as an Indian specimen in their collection. In 1882 Jumbo was sold to P. T. Barnum, for his touring circus in North America, but died in tragic circumstances in 1885 when he was hit by a train at a marshalling yard in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Jumbo the African Elephant: A Giant of Regents Park, 1865 This image captures Jumbo the African elephant, a colossal figure and a major attraction at the Gardens of the Zoological Society in Regents Park, London, in 1865. Jumbo's arrival at the zoo was a significant event, as he was acquired in a historic swap with the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The exchange fulfilled the Zoological Society's wish to possess both an African and an Indian elephant in their collection, expanding their diverse menagerie. Jumbo, known for his impressive size and gentle demeanor, can be seen here in a moment of repose, as he delicately plucks leaves from a tree, showcasing the intricate relationship between man and nature. The image, taken in 1865, reveals the awe and fascination that Jumbo instilled in the public, who flocked to the zoo to witness the magnificent creature up close. However, Jumbo's story took an unexpected turn in 1882 when he was sold to P.T. Barnum for his touring circus in North America. Tragically, in 1885, Jumbo met his end in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, when he was struck by a train at a marshalling yard, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate and inspire generations.
