Tenth Tyler

John Tyler, Tenth President of the United States

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the likeness of John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States, who served from 1841 to 1845. Tyler's presidency was marked by political turmoil and controversy, following the unexpected death of President William Henry Harrison just one month into his term. Born on March 29, 1790, in Charles City County, Virginia, Tyler began his political career as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He later served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate before becoming Vice President under President John Quincy Adams in 1841. Tyler's ascension to the presidency came about when Harrison died on April 4, 1841, leaving Tyler to assume the role. Tyler's presidency was fraught with challenges. He faced opposition from many in the Whig Party, who had supported Harrison, and his own party, the Democrats, who had not originally supported his candidacy. Tyler's most significant accomplishment during his presidency was the passage of the Annexation of Texas, which set the stage for the Mexican-American War and the eventual admission of Texas as a state. Despite his political achievements, Tyler's presidency is often overshadowed by his controversial actions, including his attempt to expand presidential power by issuing the "Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon," which pardoned all those who had supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. Tyler's actions led to his impeachment trial in the U.S. House of Representatives, which ended in his acquittal. This portrait, taken during Tyler's presidency, captures the intensity and determination of a man who faced adversity and controversy head-on. Tyler's legacy as the tenth President of the United States continues to be debated and studied by historians and scholars.
