EDITORS COMMENTS
1. John Shute, First Viscount Barrington (1678-1734): A Prominent Statesman and Champion of Tolerance Towards Dissenters in Early 18th Century England This portrait depicts John Shute, the first Viscount Barrington, a significant figure in English politics during the early 18th century. Born in 1678, Barrington rose to prominence as a statesman, an opponent of papists and Jacobites, yet a champion of tolerance towards dissenters. The portrait, believed to have been created around 1720, offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of this complex historical figure. John Shute began his political career as a Member of Parliament for Taunton in 1702. He quickly gained a reputation for his strong stance against Catholicism and Jacobitism, which threatened the Protestant succession. However, his views on religious tolerance extended far beyond the established Church of England. Barrington was an ardent supporter of the Protestant Dissenters, a group that included Baptists, Quakers, and Presbyterians, who were often subjected to discrimination and persecution. Despite his opposition to Catholicism and Jacobitism, Barrington advocated for religious freedom and the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts, which barred Dissenters from holding public office. His efforts towards religious tolerance earned him the nickname "The Dissenter's Friend." In 1711, he was appointed Lord Privy Seal, a position that granted him significant influence over government policy. The portrait captures the viscount's distinguished appearance, with his elegant attire and self-assured gaze. The background, adorned with intricate gold detailing, further emphasizes his status and power. This image serves as a testament to Barrington's pivotal role in English politics during a time of religious and political turmoil, as well as his unwavering commitment to religious tolerance and the protection of the rights of Dissenters.
