1612 1686 Bishop Chester Churchman Pearson
EDITORS COMMENTS
John Pearson (1612-1686), an English churchman and Bishop of Chester, is depicted in this evocative portrait. Pearson was born in Hackney, Middlesex, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained a deacon in 1635 and a priest in 1636, and went on to hold various ecclesiastical positions throughout the English Church. During the English Civil War, Pearson remained loyal to the Crown and was appointed Chaplain to King Charles I. He was imprisoned during the Commonwealth period, but was released after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. In 1669, Pearson was consecrated Bishop of Chester, a position he held until his death in 1686. Pearson was a prolific writer and scholar, producing works on various theological and historical topics. He is perhaps best known for his "Exposition of the Creed," a comprehensive commentary on the Apostles' Creed, which went through multiple editions and was widely used in Anglican circles. Pearson was also a strong defender of the Anglican Church and its doctrines, and was instrumental in the drafting of the Articles of Religion of 1662. Despite his loyalty to the Church and the Monarchy, Pearson was not without controversy. He was involved in several theological disputes and was accused of Socinianism, a heresy that denied the divinity of Christ. However, he was exonerated by the Church and continued to serve as Bishop of Chester until his death. This portrait of John Pearson offers a glimpse into the life of an influential English churchman and scholar of the late 17th century. With his stern expression and ecclesiastical robes, Pearson appears as a man of deep faith and commitment to the Anglican Church. The intricately detailed background and richly textured fabric of his robes add to the sense of history and tradition that surrounds this important figure in English religious history.
