EDITORS COMMENTS
John More (circa 1547-1592): A Clergyman and Cartographer of Biblical Times This evocative portrait captures the scholarly and contemplative spirit of John More, a fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, and a revered clergyman of St. Andrew's Church in Norwich. More was not only a man of the cloth but also an accomplished cartographer, dedicating many years of his life to the creation of an intricately detailed map of Canaan, based on meticulous biblical research. More's passion for cartography and theology intersected in his quest to understand the geography of the Holy Land as described in the Bible. His map, which was unfinished at the time of his untimely death in 1592, was later taken over by the renowned cartographer John Speed (portrait lower right). Speed, who was also a fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, recognized the significance of More's work and saw it through to completion. The resulting map, titled "Canaan in Biblical Times," was published as a 14-page hand-coloured map in 1595. More's legacy lives on through this remarkable piece of cartographic and theological history. In this portrait, More is depicted in the attire of the era, wearing a ruff collar and a hat adorned with a skull and hourglass, symbolizing the transience of life. Angels, perhaps representing inspiration or guidance, are shown in the background, writing on parchment scrolls. The text and theology of the Bible were undoubtedly his guiding lights in both his religious and cartographic pursuits.
