EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, John Laverick, a renowned cook of the Special Boat Service (SBS), is seen preparing a meal amidst the rugged terrain of Crete during Operation Albumen in 1942. The image, captured by Colonel David Sutherland of the SBS and SAS, depicts Laverick in his element, surrounded by the essentials of a makeshift camp. The SBS, a British special forces unit, was renowned for its daring raids behind enemy lines during World War II. Laverick and his fellow SBS soldiers were part of a 12-man unit that made a daring raid on the occupied Greek island of Rhodes, preceding Operation Albumen on Crete. This operation was a significant success, resulting in the destruction of 29 German aircraft for the loss of only one officer. Following this victory, Sutherland and several Cretans, who feared German reprisals, escaped together. The photograph offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of life for these soldiers during wartime. The Aegean and Mediterranean fronts presented unique challenges, with their rocky, mountainous terrain and the ever-present threat of enemy forces. Despite these challenges, the SBS soldiers, including John Laverick, remained focused on their mission, ensuring their survival through resourcefulness and determination. This historical image offers a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who served in the SBS during World War II. The photograph, taken circa 1942, is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their country and their ability to adapt to the most challenging of circumstances.
